I have been in the beauty industry for a total of 32 years now! I purchased my first salon at the age of 18. I was very fortunate in that I had excellent training which allowed me success as a stylist but soon found that, there was more to running a business than having good hands and large clientele. I had little or no management training and so began my learning by trial and error!

Seminars seemed like a good idea and the distributors were willing to bring in the guru's and experts, who instruct you on how to be successful! That was enlightening! Sure ...they had the answers! But all of those solutions involve time! Monitoring buying habits, client callbacks, staff goalsetting, inventory control, advanced payroll structures, effective phone or mail marketing. Without a large support staff to implement all of these ideas, it seemed an impossible task. I was spending the entire day behind the chair and coming home to do a couple hours of books every night.

A computer seemed to provide the solution I needed. After an extensive search for computer software, I discovered 2 things... 1) that industry specific software is Expensive..and 2) even though it says it is for an industry..chances are it was developed by someone who didn't know much about the industry! Thus began ESMSI

My idea was to develop salon software that was powerful, comprehensive and addressed the needs of every aspect of the industry, yet affordable to all. Development began in 1986 and in 1990 I stepped away from the chair with the intent to market my tool...haha! I have enjoyed the transition and still enjoy being a part of the beauty industry. Now classes, trade shows and seminars are my new artistic endeavors! A special thanks to Mark D Foley who, when promoting me on his "Sail to Supernatural Salon Success" cruise called me the "Salon Computerization Guru" . Boy...Times have changed!

The Future

I am very excited that technology has entered the Beauty industry at last! The industry of artists has been the last to really grasp the power that technology can provide, but it's just getting started!

Before too long, I can see salon owners doing a lot of their business operations with the computer as their main managerial tool!

The future looks exciting! Imagine having your stock monitored and restocked by distributors online or emailing new product announcements to your existing clients in a weekly newsletter. Imagine the power, with no production or distribution costs! With most major banks offering PC banking, you will run your payroll calculations off the computer and the cheques will automatically be deposited in your employee's bank accounts! This is just scratching the surface of what is available.

Eventually DVD training will evolve so that if a junior operator has a cancellation and wants additional training on the latest braiding techniques, simply insert the DVD in a computer and voila! Instant training!
